I replaced the waterpump on my 2001 yamaha 200 hpdi, was told be the dealer to have in gear when doing this, put it back together and when shift to neutral the prop won't turn, still in gear. How do I get this lined up properly so it shifts right?

Re: waterpump

Lorimar, I was just having the same problem with my 25hp and was reading thru the forum for answers and found it. Disconnect the shift linkage adjuster from the lower unit shift linkage, probably the adjuster you've been futzing with. Now push the lower unit linkage down until it locks the prop in reverse. Next put your shift lever (handle) in reverse and start turning the adjusting linkage nut to join the lower linkage unit rod to the adjuster. DO NOT TAKE EITHER OUT OF REVERSE!! What happened was you had the shift handle most likely in reverse so you could easily get at the adjuster but the rod on the lower unit was in neutral when you screwed them together. Real simple once you try it. Good luck.

put the shifter in nuetral use a 12pt socket and place the lower unit in nuetral, install the gearcase in nuetral.

Re: waterpump

I'm not understanding how a socket would work?? It's a 10mm turnbuckle with a shaft coming from each end. If I put a socket on it I would have to put the shift rod thru the 3/8 ratchet hole. The adjustable turnbuckle is up inside the tube in neutral, thats why I put both in reverse. According to another post I read it said to always have the drive in gear when dropping the lower unit. Didn't say what gear but I assumed this was why. I'm cerainly no expert here so maybe you can clarify these things for us. I also ordered the service manual so I wont fumble so much next time.

its why we dont like thread high jacks.
YOUR 25 is a vastly different design than lorimar;s 200 HPDI.
the 25 needs to be shifted into reverse to access the barrel nut and jam nut,the 200 HPDI needs to be in N.

Re: waterpump

Thanks, I should have realized there were differences between a 25 and 200.

Re: waterpump

no worries.
if I miss a thread and I do, dont be afraid to bump it once or twice.
just try to post new threads with your issues.
some of the C40 use a turnbuckle the 40 uses a splined shaft.
its why a model number sometimes is critical.
its why I constantly ask for model numbers.
the 150 HP yamaha has been imported to the states in at least 6 versions, all with differences, the 200 and 225 were as well.
lots of others too.
