Have a J90vlsss Johnson that needs an waterpunp impeller.A quick look at the motor only instilled dread in me,as there appears to be a huge amount of work to do to remove the lower end.
Or perhaps I am making more out of this than is neccessary.
How does the shift rod get released in order to lower the bottom end?

Whem looking at the front of the motor, under the carbs, there is a rod the goes from left to right, with the control cables attached to the left side.
There a clip pin thru the shaft on that side.I cannot even see the shift rod connector that is supposed to attach to that shaft.I do see a clamp about 1/2 inch wide attached to the right end of the shaft with a bolt.I can not see where the shift rod attaches.

I feel your pain. My manual (60 hp) was equally as vague "remove the clip" .

What is failed to say was that after you remove the clip, pull the shaft out an inch or so. Then look at the other end on the opposite side of the motor. The clamp does not need to be unbolted. The mechanism just slides apart and the shift rod can be unhooked.
Hope this is same for yours..

I have a J90PLSSE...almost the same motor. I had to unbolt the clamp to get mine apart. It wasn't very hard.

Patrick, the shift rod is flat on the end and is clamped between the shift lever in back of the lower carb. Remove that pin thru that shaft and push the shift lever to the starboard side of the engine. This opens the that shift lever to release the shift rod. Sometimes it helps to remove that long link from where the shift control cable connects.

You'll find six bolts holding the lower unit on. One under the trim tab, one just forward of the trim tab and four more bolts, two on each side of the gear case. The lower unit should drop off.

Getting a manual would help you a lot.

Hello Patrick,I came in from my shop ten minuets ago, tearing down a 89-150.I took my bottom carb.off so I could get to the shift rod.I trimed motor down, put some rags under the skeg, unbolted it,eased it down, steaded it with one hand, trimed it up,let it slide right off.Took one hour.If I can do it, you can do it.Its not bad as it looks.
