Water tube issues

I have a 1975 6hp johnson. I had to replace the water pump impeller and when I lowered the lower unit and got it off I saw that the upper water tube grommet was shredded. I couldn't figure out how it was shredded but anyways I ordered a new one. I had to take the water tube out in order to replace the upper grommet. I had a hard time getting the grommet in with the water tube. Anyways I I finally got both in and reassembled the lower unit. When I started it up the water was coming out of the upper grommet and coming out the hole on the leg in the mid section but water was also coming out of the water discharge/exhaust. How can the water be exiting the tube/grommet? I'm having a hard time with this project and would really like to be able to fix it because it was my grandfathers and I promised I would get it running. Also I can't keep my finger on the engine because it is extremely hot. I should be able too right? In the manual it says that the theromstat opens at 145 degrees. Can I open the theromstat cover while the engine is running and see how much water is running through? Any help would be great. Thanks and I also tried posting a video but it wouldn't post.

Sounds like the upper grommet isn't fitted tightly. And if it leaks by, the water will exit the mid section hole. You may need to drop the mid section and refit the grommet and water tube and try it again. I know that is a PITB, but there is no other way but to refit it. Make sure the water tube and grommet are fitted tightly to each other. If the tube is a little crushed where it fits into the grommet, it will allow water to get by and not flow properly through the engine. So verify the tube is round and the grommet is not cut. JMHO!

Yeah I agree with you but the problem with that is that this motor is the extended model and when I went to unscrew the bolts 3 of the heads snapped off. Now I have one bolt that I didn't touch and 3 that have the heads off and about 1/4" left of the screw in the hole. If I get the remaining screws out I don't know if I can get another screw back in because the threads have some kinda of hard material from the screw. I tried to post a pic to show you but for some reason I can't. Any help will be WELL appricated.
