I have a 1975 6hp johnson. I had to replace the water pump impeller and when I lowered the lower unit and got it off I saw that the upper water tube grommet was shredded. I couldn't figure out how it was shredded but anyways I ordered a new one. I had to take the water tube out in order to replace the upper grommet. I had a hard time getting the grommet in with the water tube. Anyways I I finally got both in and reassembled the lower unit. When I started it up the water was coming out of the upper grommet and coming out the hole on the leg in the mid section but water was also coming out of the water discharge/exhaust. How can the water be exiting the tube/grommet? I'm having a hard time with this project and would really like to be able to fix it because it was my grandfathers and I promised I would get it running. Also I can't keep my finger on the engine because it is extremely hot. I should be able too right? In the manual it says that the theromstat opens at 145 degrees. Can I open the theromstat cover while the engine is running and see how much water is running through? Any help would be great. Thanks and I also tried posting a video but it wouldn't post.
