I have a 2001 200 hp Johnson outboard. While idling a good distance yesterday, the overheat alarm went off. There was good water pressure the entire time. When I turned the motor off, I thought I detected a slight electrical burning smell for a few seconds. I checked to make sure there was no fire. When I restarted the motor, the water temp. light remained on but, there was no sound from the alarm. The motor also remained in S.L.O.W. mode. I tried several times, unsuccessfully, to reset the alarm by turning it off and on. Again the light remained on, however it flickered quickly on and off the entire way back to the ramp. It also remained in S.L.O.W., no sound from the alarm, and had good water pressure. This morning, with the motor completely cold, I again started it. The warning system checked itself as usual but, as the warning lights went off one at a time, the water temp. light stayed on. There was no warning beep other than normal when starting up. I did not move from the trailer but I'm sure it would have been in S.L.O.W. There is no way it could already be hot since it had not been started in 16 hours.
My mechanic is out of town and I have a very important client scheduled to go out on the lake with me at 6:00am monday. From past experience with these motors, I have to think this is simply a faulty sensor. Would it be safe to assume this since I have normal water pressure? If so, what is the best way to disconnect the sensor until tuesday? Thanks.

Re: water temp. light stays on

FLROB....There is a temp sensor on each head. Disconnect one at a time and see if either will clear the light and SLOW mode. If either does, the sensor is bad. The sensors are connected with a knife connector. Should be under the rubber boot on the wire from the sensor. From your symptoms descibed, a sensor could very well be at fault.

You may also look under the dash and see if there is anything that looks burnt, regarding the electrical smell. Also check the engine harness.

Do bear in mind that if you operate with one or the other temp sensor disconnected, you do run a risk, however small, of overheating the engine and not knowing about it.

EDIT: Pardon my poor manners....Welcome to iboats forums. :)
