Johnson 6hp 1975. I replaced the impeller and engine appears to run ok. However, water is now squirting under a fair amount of pressure from a seam along the lower unit above the shifter linkage and impeller. The bolts are as tight as i dare crank them, already stripped one of them. Is water supposed to fill the chamber above the impeller? Prior to replacing the impeller i didnt notice the squirting. I know the impeller is properly connected to the water intake line. What could cause this type of pressure, and most importantly, is it bad for the motor???

Howdy, Jselbig. Once in a while what we know isn't so. Your water pump is pumping water back into the lake. Drop the foot and find out why.

If there is no obvious reason down there, see if you can get a hose to put water through your normal cooling passages. Sufficient blockage in the powerhead will cause the pumped water to seek another exit.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB

I recently ahd a problem like this with at Evinrude 115 that I purchased used. I took it to the dealer and they said once the factory seal is broken that they leak like a bandit. Fortunatley the water pressure guage and the overheat sensor are there to protect me. Is the pee tube letting water out at full stream? I'd be curious to know if there is a blockage. If the unit has been in salt water then I might belive that or if the impeller disintegrated and went up in to one of the passages. In any case how does the stream from the pee tube look? Straight and strong, probably nothing wrong. Limp and weak, Motor in the shop for a few weeks. ;^)

Good Luck,
John
http://www.hunt-fish.com
