Water separator - small engine

I used to use my boats so much year round that I always had fresh gas and never saw the need, or got informed on water separators. My current 3-4 year Yam25 2stroke is not seeing as much use due to a fleet of kayaks now, LOL.

Would like to install a water/fuel separator inside the transom. Are the common cartridge oil filter types ok for smaller engines? Is micron size of filter an issue with smaller outboards?

Thx ahead of time for any assist.

Re: Water separator - small engine

Walmart sells a good, inexpensive fuel/water separating filter for $27, easy 2 screw installation, will prevent most fuel related problems, especially if used in conjunction with a fuel stabilizer like Stabil Marine or Seafoam. I've had one on my 90HP Yamaha about 3 years, just unscrew it, dump out the debris, water, whatever, screw it back on. If anything gets past that filter then your under cowl mounted filter should pick it up. Also, not a bad idea to drain your carbs maybe a couple of times a year, and especially at winterizing and you can just leave them empty during lay-up. Good Luck!
