How often do you expect under normal conditions to change filter?
Any tips?
Where is the best place to buy/price?

Re: water separator/fuel filter

if the boat is outside and uncovered then once a month check it and 2 a year replace it. I recommend the style with a drain on the bowl. to many people dont check the water seperator and run it until it fills up and feeds nasty water to the fuel system.
good luck and keep posting

So the unit is like the oil filter but you can dump the moisture, hopefully not water.
What ball park cost of the unit that you describe against the standard.
Many thanks for the quick replies
hope to get a problem regarding stability sorted with trim tabs.

hello
peter, the racor unit with the reusable drain bowl is about 40 dollars. after that the replacement elements are about 20 each. but the racor is so big that replacement is usually only once per year. you can drain it daily if you like.
good luck and keep posting

Racor makes a great filter but a poor quality bracket. It corrodes easily in salt water climates. Racor makes replacement filters and bowls for the common 'MERC" style and "OMC" style spin on filters. Sierra makes a stainless steel bracket and Tempo has a corrosion resistant chrome plated one. Get one of those and then a Racor replacement kit and you have the best of both worlds. That way you can use the Racor filter (expensive) or the common spin-on style (cheap) depending on your needs.

Bass and Walleye Boats last year did an article on filters and how much water they will stop.

You cannot use the plastic bowl filter kit in a gasoline powered stern-drive or inboard boat in an enclosed area per Coast Guard regs and Federal Law. All fuel related parts have to withstand a 2.5 minute fire without leaking fuel. Approved Racor filters have a UL on the end of the part number. For inboard use, Racor makes a metal bowl with a drain plug.
