hi,
been searching the archives for a post on replacing the impeller on a '75 Merc 50hp. No luck. I have ordered a manual but it hasn't arrived yet and would like to get at it. Or, should I take it to the local marina? What would be a fair price ?
From all that I have read it doesn't sound like a big job but like most things I'm sure there's a trick or 2. I'm no mechanic but usually do okay, after the initial scraped knuckles from opening the tool box..

I have the same motor and it is usually pretty easy so you should be fine. if you don't want to wait on your manual, go to the library and copy the pages you need. I would guess labor is about $75 per hour plus parts so around a $100.

You haven't mentioned the s/n of your engine but if you are sure it is a 1975, here is the parts list:

MERC 500 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

The service manual you require for your engine is p/n 90-75512

In the interim, here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual which will help you get your impeller changed. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home: MERCURY - MERCURY FOUR-CYLINDER MODELS (1969-1989).

Re: water pump

thanks guys, definitely this motor is worth working on! It's been sleeping for a few years but fired right up with some fresh gas and a new battery. Serial # is 4284564, a '75 I believe. I also have a parts motor, # C3243778 I dunno what year it is... says Kiekauffer on it....
