Water Pump?

I took off my sx outdrive for the first time everything went smooth. I checked alignment and gimbal bearing all is good when I reinstalled the outdrive and then connected it to my muffs i get no water coming out at the bottom of drive. I checked top water pump hoses going into thermostat with muffs on and water running and I dont see any water coming to the top. I removed the bottom hoses at the water pump and i dont see any water. I was wondering if it could be the thermostat not opening? Or did I do something wrong putting drive back on which wasnt to difficult thanks

Re: Water Pump?

Not the thermostat.
Did you replace that Volkswagen shaped sealing ring around the water passage? If not, it's probably sucking air and you probably burned up the impeller too.

Actually I do have water on the bottom hose of water pump, now Had to hold it down a bit. And no I didnt replace that volks wagon seal as it looked good I did clean around it and put a bit of antiseize on it. So guess i have to check that little impeller.. I havent changed it since ive owned the boat 3rd year now and its A 2002 thanks

Why would you put anitseize (aka everseize on your drive) on an oring? Replace the oring, looks doesn't mean anything, and you have an air leak.
DO NOT... Repeat DO NOT use everseize on your drive, ever, never, never.
It causes a impermanent bond between aluminum and Stainless steel.

Re: Water Pump?

ok will do I took apart the impeller and theres one fin broken not sure if this is enough to make it lose suction...time to call for parts. I see it kinda twists to fit in there..

That's what makes it a pressure pump.

What is your engines full model number (all the letters) or serial number.

Re: Water Pump?

I used to make kits for the SX drive used for winterization. It included the VW gasket, and all the drain.fill plug and dip stick gaskets and cotter pins for pulling the drive and changing oil in the drive. Put them in baggies and made it easy to find them when needed.
Granted I worked at a shop and did about a dozen or so a year, but it was sure nice to have them handy when needed.

21213660 is the part number for the impeller kit (includes the oring)

You can get all this right here at iboats Volvo Penta Marine Engine Parts and Accessories Online Store - Volvo Penta and iboats ships to Canada.

Re: Water Pump?

Thanks but when i go to link is says US only... Anyways I got the parts and reistalled everything and fired it up and I still got no water coming out, I have water right to thermostat...Being paranoid abt the impeller burning up I shut boat off and tried it again and still nothing how long before it opens and what temp.. i did see a few drops of water coming out but no significnt amount like normal. I dont want to burn up impeller even though I think its in water I took it apart and still like new. I think that the thermostat is toast

Re: Water Pump?

It will circulate water through the exhaust system, thermostat or not. Even if the thermostat was stuck shut, water would be flowing.

Did you replace the impeller with the broken vane? Including the oring for the pump housing?

Re: Water Pump?

yes I did. I did hear a small squeak when I shut motor off I do have a little play in water pump pulley.. A note i did flush engine with engine drain hose and water does come out at bottom of exhaust so it cant be blocked

Re: Water Pump?

so even if the water pump is squeaking that will stop the impeller from sucking from outdrive? I take it there should be no play in that pulley above the impeller correct ? oh by the way I didnt have a overheating issue just got it outta storage

Re: Water Pump?

Well success people I feel like a complete idiot though. I checked inside thermostat housing for blockage since I was haveing water right up hose to it and all clear, idunno how you would take out thermostat, if i had to its like part of housing weird? When I winterize boat I always pull off all hoses after im done winterizing just in case theres any water stuck anywhere its got somewhere to expand and go. I reattached impeller hoses backwards LOL ....so pump was pushing out water instead feeding it... I switched them al presto water out the back end and boat is purring like a kitten......thanks for everyones help...

Re: Water Pump?

Thanks for telling us, for your future info the thermostat is held in place with an "O" ring under the stat flange, it gets covered in rust/deposits and can look just like the casting.
