Re: Water pump

OK gotcha....
Now do they make a spring pin removal tool ? I would hate to use a hammer and punch for fear of bending the rod..
Thanks again
Don

Re: Water pump

They do have some absolutely beautiful anodized spring pin removal tools that sells for around $50.00. I think they brought them into the U.S back in 84...I don't think Tohatsu has ever sold any:) The tool is a $1.00 standard type of punch. Just use any punch that fits and you will be fine.

Re: Water pump

I had the same question when I was going to pull mine, as the upper pin would not knock out do to the previous owner using another form of pin that rusted in place. I actually broke the punch in the process.
Alvin advised me to remove the lower pin, which pushed out easiy with a standard punch with very little effort and the lower unit dropped right off. It's really very simple.

Re: Water pump

Tohatsu sells a pair of tools for the 3mm pins; Our shop has both the removal driver and the insertion driver. The insertion driver is a cup-style punch, while the extraction punch is pretty much a standard drift, with a stepped tip to center it in the pin. They are a bit pricey, but we love them. Maybe we're the only shop that bought them from the factory? Dunno, but they work well on rust-swelled pins, which sometimes happens when someone mistakenly installs a non-stainless roll pin in the coupler. BTW, they also sell this pair of tools in 3.5mm, which fits the clutch dog retaining pin. And yes, they cost about $25 per tool -- $50 per set for each size pin.

Re: Water pump

Ok, job done. Pretty easy. One question. I put the impeller in that stainless steel housing, Was I supposed to lube that housing with grease ? Because I didnt and its in there dry. Kind of hard to turn but maybe thats the way its supposed to be. Right ?
Thanks Don

Re: Water pump

Agreed with Elvin -- the impeller is water-lubricated. That is why you never, ever, run the motor out of water. In fact, just pulling the recoil starter can be hard on the impeller.

But there are some who do lube the impeller -- say with a light coating of Teflon grease or a quick spray of McLube sailkote) during assembly -- to make assembly easier. The critical thing is that many lubricants may attack the rubber vanes of the impeller. Keep in mind that anything in the water pump cup will be sent through the cooling system.

Don,
*
I made a wee mistake on the sizing of the pins. It was early, and I was running on human memory.
The 3.5mm pin fits the clutch dog retainer in the LU.
*
The correct spring pins for the shift coupler are p/n 951403-0312, which are 3mm x 12mm, and cost $ 0.53 ea.
Spring pin tool A (to drive the 3mm pin out, has a stepped nose) p/n 345-72227-0, costs $ 26.63.
Spring pin tool B (to insert the pin in the coupler, has a cupped nose) p/n 345-72228-0, costs $ 21.35.
*
Nissan recommends using new pins every time you reattach the coupler. If you find that the coupler has been distorted from someone using the wrong pins, a replacement is: p/n 346-66241-1, costs $2.77
