water pump wooooooos

have johnson 60hp...trying to replace water pump 4 the first time!!! have manual but it only says 2 remove 4 bolts & separate the gear case from exhaust.... i'v taken all bolts out including ones on trim tab.! but gear case & exhaust won't come appart????? is there a trick to this??please help!!!!

does the manual mention disconnecting the shift shaft ???? check under the carb for screw connector
