water pump went out

While running my 65hp mercury motor shut down. Motor was hot and smoking. found the problem to be the impellar vains gone. is their any damage done to engine or how can you tell? :eek:

ouchhhhhhhh! when a outboard overheats to a point of smoking and shutting down they don't take kindly to it, first pull the head and check for cylinder wall scoring,usually an overheat like that requires a powerhead tear down,if the cylinder walls look good then your next step would be a compression check, if all this looks good you are very lucky,good luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that engine have a blind cylinder bore. If you want to inspect the walls for scoring, you may have to borrow a "bore scope" and inspect them through the plug holes. :confused:
