Being new to the do-it-yourself world, I have gained a wealth of information on this site. Need to ask another question......Is this where the water inlet on the foot is???

As you may have read in my other posts, I cooked the first water pump impeller by running it in a drum. The water level fell low when the hose came out. Anyway, got a new impeller and have the water pump reinstalled...

I've flushed the motor by putting the water hose against the water tube in the midleg and am getting a strong flow of water through the exhaust holes in the back and through the plug (removed for inspection) in the top of the thermostat housing.

Being extremely cautious, I also hooked the muffs up to the foot with it off the motor. I put them around the horizontal holes in the side of the foot right behind the prop (see pic above). I was thinking that I should be getting water up through the foot into the water pump and out of the hole that mates with the water pickup tube. NO water will come out. Am I correct in thinking this? Is there a way to check for blockage before I put the foot back on? Just want to be really careful this time and cover all my bases. I've got all the time in the world, but not much money to sink into this for careless errors.

You will not get any water flow unless the impeller in the water pump is turning. The impeller vanes will block any water flow if it is not turning.

If you really wanna test it, then wrap black tape around the drive shaft. then use a drill with an adapter, and socket that will fit over said tape. When you turn it with the drill you will pump water. If it does your good.

But yes....thats the water pick up port..Good pics!

Usually the vanes come off the pump because they were old and cracked.A melted impeller won't usually go up the tube to the motor.
Make sure there is grease on the vanes when installing. And NEVER EVER EVER NEVER walk away and leave it while it's running.
I was at work one day and was running a motor and all of a sudden it started buzzing(overheat alarm).
I shut it off and went to look. The hose was still on as I taped it in position. The hose was ok just no water.I went looking and the yard guy was walking away with half the hose.Said something about washing the owners car and that $%^&*& boat wasn't that important.
After the cost of the impeller and pump housing and the time it took to fix it.The owner made sure that the yard guy didn't unhook another hose.He took the $ out of his pay.J

Also if running in a barrel make sure the water is over the heigth of the impeller and housing.
If the insides of your housing are scored or the wear plates are shot it will NOT suck water only cavitate in place.J

I went out into the yard and stared at the foot after posting. Sat there for quite a while before I figured this out. Didn't hook the drill to it, but turned it by hand and got soap bubbles (lube for installing impeller) and water out of the top of the housing. You must have been typing that as I thought it. ;)

Photography is one of my other expensive hobbies, can't stand fuzzy pics!
Thanks!

After that, I don't think I'd touch another hose either!! Yeah, I learned my lesson, but I guess to look at the bright side.......I can take the foot off, change the impeller, and reinstall everything by myself now! EDIT: With my wife's help also.....she's really into learning how to do stuff like this also. I consider myself lucky!
