Hi. I have a 1994 150 hp Johnson Fast Strike that I purchased new in 1994 with my boat. I have never replaced the water pump and (after reading the many posts about changing it on here) probably will this spring. I have a couple of questions. First, can I get by with just an impeller change? If so, what is the part number of the impeller? If I need to install a complete water pump kit, what part number kit would I need? Thanks very much for the help. Are the Sierra kits I see on here ok or should I stick with the original OMC parts?

It borders on miraculous that you have not had any problems using the original waterpump on a 1994 motor. Change the whole pump assembly and from now on don't let it go past 2 seasons (cheap insurance). If the OMC one lasted 10 yrs, I'd stick with that.

There are two different but similar looking water pump kits depending on the shaft length of your motor. Stick with OEM kits, they come complete and are around $55.

20" shaft motors take the OEM #5001594 kit and the 25" shafts with the "split line" gearcase take the #5001595 kit. Follow the included directions to the letter.

Re: Water Pump Replacement Kt

Hey, thanks for the responses. I do have a shop manual. I purchased it after recommendations from this forum. I just have not put it into action as yet. I will however use it to install a new water pump this spring before I take the boat out. Seahorse, thanks for the part numbers for the water pump kits. I will order one soon. Is it better to just go to the nearest OMC dealer to purchase one or is there a website that offers a better deal? Again, thanks for all the help.

Ron

Buy a kit locally. You might find one for 15% off from an online dealer, but they will hit you up for around $10 shipping, so it is not a great deal, plus you have to wait for it, and it may be the wrong one, missing parts, previously opened, etc.

Thanks, Seahorse. I have an OMC dealer about 3 blocks from my house, so I will get one there. I take it that it is not too difficult to put the water pump kit in? You have any trade secrets (other than what is in the manual) to make it easier to install?

Just follow the factory shop manual, step by step.

The Type M sealer is also known as Marpox sealer 1000, Boat Armour Sealer 1000, or in the automotive trade, 3M type 847.

Be sure that you measure the shift rod height exactly as explained in the manual, or you could have expensive gearcase problems down the road.

Thanks again Seahorse. I will read the manual several times to assure I do it correctly. Next spring I will let you know how it went. It's gonna be a long winter!!

Get your parts 3 blocks away and get to know him and his wrenches. They might in time give you free advice and you never know when you might need them.

I second firemans advice. I've been buying parts from a local place for years & I don't know how many times they have given advice & taken time to look up something for me. Once they even got the service manager who then answered my question & showed me on a similar engine.
Besides that their prices are as good as anybody elses.
Last time I bought a waterpump kit from omc it had detailed instructions w/ it.

Thanks, you guys. I bought my ignition switch from the place three blocks away and the tech was really helpful back then. I will follow your advice. Again, thanks.
Ron
