Re: Water pump replacement instruction for Evinrude 35hp
If you want to send me your mail address, I can send you scans of the manual pages; otherwise, in brief: losen 4 screws and 1 bolt to pull down the lower unit; remove the water intake screens and unlock the shift shaft, safe the rubber ring in a safe place. Losen the six screws on top of the water pump, pull out the transmission shaft holding the lower unit upright (possibly in a vice). By the book, remove the water tube from the pump housing. Be careful not to damage the gaskets underneath the waterpump, if you have replacement (which is actually the correct proceeding), pry the impeller plate loose. Remove the nylon water intake screen from the gearcase cavity (if so equipped). Then invert the impeller housing and remove the impeller and impeller cup; remove and discard the o-ring under the impeller cup. Remove and discard the shift-rod o-ring and bushing. Then lubricate and reinsert shift-rod bushing and o-ring in impeller housing, insert the impeller cup in the housing, aligning with the appropriate cutouts, install the impeller with a downward rotating motion, install water intake nylon screen (if so equipped); install the impeller plate gasket, the impeller plate and the second gasket that sits on top of the impeller plate; slide the impeller housing and impeller over the drive-shaft, rotate the shaft to align the drive key with the impeller groove. Insert the shaft with the impeller housing into the lower unit, tighten the six screws. You should replace the grommet the houses the water tube, if available; reinsert the water tube and, rotating the transmission shaft clockwise you should hear the impeller rotate freely. Apply the lower unit to the centerpiece, appropriate grease on the top end of the transmission shaft, making sure the water tube slides into his housing underneath the powerhead; if necessary, put in forward and rotate the prop to insert the transmission shaft into the powerhead. Screw the four screws and 1 bolt that hold the lower unit, inside the water screen slide the upper bolt up, reinsert the plastic washer and screw the together with two 1/2 inch wrenches. Reapply the water intake screens. If you have a full unit, most steps do not apply; I have not mentioned removing rests of gaskets and other obvious details like reasing o-rings etc. that you are certainly familiar with. Check the temp when you restart the engine. It is my favorite outboard.
