Water pump replace

It's been a enough years since I've replaced the water pump, so I know it's fine and I have on hand. I rebuilt the power head about 10-12 years ago and I know I did a replacement then and it wasn't too bad, but everything was apart. I think I had it done since, but can't recall. Obviously it's time, boat had sat a season and half and washing to get back out.

I have the shift rod linkage unhooked as I had to replace the exhaust gasket at the mid section. My question is what's the average time to replace and any unknowns to look out for.

The evinrude service manual states to rotate the prop and shift to reverse then remove the shift rod screw. What does this serve? I'm not sure without going to check if I shifted to reverse even I lifted PH to replace the exhaust gasket. I followed the manual though. Do I need to reattach and do this? That screw is a PIA!

My main concern on all of this is when I rebuilt the PH the only issue I had was timing, carb sync AND I couldn't get the darn forward/reverse sync'd up. IF it'd shift forward it wouldn't go into reverse, if I got reverse then no forward. Shop got me going, BUT I'd like to avoid that and that is what keeps me from replacing water pump more often. I keep close eye on the tell tail and I have a gauge....I realize importance of good pump.

Should I be ok, IF I don't allow that shift rod to spin?

You put it in reverse so the shift linkage is higher and you can access the bolt. When the leg is off, be sure and NOT turn the shift rod. If you turn it, that will mess up your shifting pretty quick - probably what the shop fixed. I can R&R the leg on mine and do the water pump in about 2 hours.

Thanks. I have the lower unit dropped and the old water pump off. Off in a few to the parts store as my adhesive 847 is nowhere to be found....must have tossed it or used up. I think I still have triple guard grease as that's what it calls for. If NOT will any marine grease work fine?

Also, what about the gasket sealing, as long as water resit should I be good? I have black, red, gray, etc rtv.

I also need to buy some new lower unit oil. That's just Johnson/evinrude....correct? OR do they have different ones. I can't recall. If memory is correct Walmart has, if not I'll hit the boat shop.

Ok, well......

Boat shop said DON'T use any gasket sealer or anything in water pump area. Maybe some Vaseline on o ring.

Thoughts?

Believe Vaseline won't do well with the rubber. Maybe a little 2-stroke oil or l.u. lube, if anything. Stay away from any silicone sealant.

Well, called another shop and they also said pot it together dry, so I basically did that. I used a very small amount of grease on the o ring to keep it in place. I also added some dish soap inside the cup for the impeller. Read online that it helps give since lubricant to impeller when it starts the first time. All went fairly well until I put in the larger built in the lower unit and it was stripped. I vaguely remember it being tough to seat the last time, but it did. Guess this was it's last go around.....after dropping the unit the third time I finally got some new thread inserts and all is good. I'll hopefully fire her up tomorrow!

Thanks for the help....
