I just installed a new water pump on my 1985 Evinrude 150HP XP E150STLCO and notice that I was left with an exta grommet. I took a look at the parts breakdown for the gearcase and it shows the grommet going to the shift rod linkage. When I took the lower unit off, this grommet was not installed; nor was the seal that goes over the top of this grommet. So, my questions are... Are there certain models that don't need this grommet? If this grommet was suppose to have been there could it have caused any problems since it was not there? Thanks to all!

I believe the only problem would be water in the gearcase oil...which would be very noticeable...milky looking lube! Extended water in the gearcase will destroy your L.U.

If your lube is clear...there isn't any problem. I would just check your lube the next time you run your motor...or now if you have not run it already. Without that grommet or similar, the gearcase will leak like a sieve!
