Installing a pump repair kit on my '83 OMC stinger 800 outdrive and have a question. The kit has 3 o-rings. I can only see where there is one inside the drive shaft. Where are the other two supposed to go? Thanks in advance.

Maybe they act as seals where it butts up to the engine? Remove the old one and see whats there. OHHH wat, its a rebuild kit... Just take it apart and see where they go. You may have one or 2 leftover if the kit is made for more than one engine.

That's what I'm thinking. My problem with reverse engineering this, is the last clown to work on it appears to have left some stuff off. So there may be a place for these rings to go, but none there now.

What you need Sir is an "exploded view diagramy" :D Who makes the pump and the kit? Maybe we can hunt one down?

What you need is a service manual.

Whelp, I see an impeller... Could be this one. water pump?
And yes, a sevice manual would be a monumental idea :)
Heres one I thinkhttp://www.sterndrive.info/cobra_manual.html Lists that its for some other years but the cover says 64 and up.

EDIT: Theres a link to OMC service manuals right here at the top of the forum page. Ya could have mentioned that MR. Moderator ;) I'm in bed with a hurt back and alot vicodan. I could have spent that time watching youtube videos!

Re: Water pump question.

I in fact have two service manuals. Neither one has a really good view, exploded or otherwise, of the take-up pump assembly. As previously mentioned, the leftover o-rings are indeed extra, as the kit is designed for more than one configuration. Muddling on.

Re: Water pump question.

The extra seals are for the OMC 400 or earlier drives, you don't need them. I guess they throw them all in there and sell the same kit for all models. I asked this question about a year ago. From what I remember, no one really knew. I figured it out though.

You will use two o-rings, the large one for the pump housing, a smaller one that will go inside the lower impeller shaft and the spline seal (not an o-ring but its in the kit, the one with the teeth to slide on water pump shaft).
