I have a 81 40hp merc, I wanted to replace the water pump, I have a seloc manual for it but was wondering what is really involved in removing the lower unit, when I take out the bolts will the unit really just slip off??? And how easy is the impeller to change?? Is there any way to tell with out disassembling the motor if the impeller is bad or not? I have good mechanical skills, I have done top ends and other matinace on my dirt bikes and snowmobiles but never had any experience with boats??? Just trying to get some input before I tear it apart<br /> Thanks

Re: Water pump question

It's easy, follow the manual and grease new impeller with vaseline make sure it goes in with the right rotation. No way to tell if old one is good or bad without looking, if telltale is showing water it is not too bad, but if it's old and cracked it might not last long.

Re: Water pump question

Some people recommend impeller replacement every 100 hrs. or 3 years, just takr your time, it's not a hard job,(most of the time).
