water pump problems, I think ?

Have a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL with a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. went to start for first time this spring, started right up but noticed that temp was going up fast. checked the ears on lower unit, water was not coming out in places it should (center of prop and further up behind outdrive) is this a water pump problem or something else?

When was the last time you replaced the impeller?

Which model GL do you have?

thanks for the fast reply, it is a 01 year, but all it says on carb cover is 5.0 GL, i have not changed impeller since i have owend the boat, its run in fresh water only, is that something i can do myself? i am mechanically inclined. thanx

Most mechanics I know suggest changing it every season. I change mine and keep spares on the boat just in case of emergency. I am guessing you have the same (or at least very similar) pump I have. If so, it is mounted on the crank shaft pulley on the front of the engine and can be changed with basic hand tools. I don't think fresh/saltwater has anything to do with impeller wear.

Again thanks for the help. i did notice that the pump that you are talking about got super hot when i touched it. am i wrong in thinking there is a water pump in lower unit as well ? or is the pump we are talking about the only one.

There is no pump or impeller in the lower unit on Volvo SX drives.
