I am not an outboard mechanic. Can you help please? I have a 93 mercury 175 hp outboard motor. Have taken the lower unit off to check condition of water pump. Pump was working fine at the end of the season last year. After reinstalling lower unit water is not pumping through engine. Have taken it a part to double check connections and allignement and all looks fine. Still no water through engine. Was told to check the popit valve. Where do I find it? What does it look like? Do you have any other troubleshooting suggestions? Thank you.

Re: Water pump problem

I sometimes use a 3/4" drive drill motor on the drive shaft of a dropped lower unit submerged in a container of water to check pump output. However, the most common reason for the problem that you have discribed is the alignment tube (pump to brass water tube). You can eliminate the "poppet" as a suspect by removing the T-stat hoses and running engine and looking for water flow. Good luck...

Did you take the pump apart to inspect the impeller? If so I'll bet you did'nt get the gaskets and o-rings to reaseal. I have a 200 Johnson and had the same problem last month. Only after pulling the lower unit 7 times and buying a new pump and gaskets did it start pumping again.

Are you sure water is not flowing through the block? or you just don't see water pissing? Down here in south Texas, we have some varmints that like to build nests inside outboard motors, they really favor open cooling ports etc. Make sure pisser hose is not clogged, disconnect and blow through, stick a piece of limp steel leader in it etc. If I had a nickel for everytime I had to do it...
