1988 Evinrude 150 XP

Doesn't seem like much water exiting from two exhaust ports below engine cover. Plenty comming from telltale. Telltale watertemp is lake temp or slightly above. Exhaust port temp is hot but you can hold your hand under spray for five seconds easily at idle speed. At 4500 rpms ocaaionally there is more discharge from exhaust ports. Maybe tied to thermostats? You can touch cylinder heads and sides of cylinders for a few seconds. Concerned about water discharge from exhaust ports. Any comments appreciated.

The telltale is lake water before it has gone through the cooling system.

All the idle rpm water must pass through the stats when cooling the powerhead. Once the engine gets up on plane, the pressure relief valves open in the stat housing-flooding the powerhead with extra cooling water. Then the powerhead temps will go down about 20 degrees. If you are concerned about the cyl head temps purchase, or rent a laser temp gun and point it on both heads. Should idle between 143 and 155 degrees in the summer. Again, cooler when the boat is on plane.

So when on plane will the water output vary through the exhaust ports? Appears to be a considerable difference in water discharge output while on plane.
