Hi to everyone. I have just found a used boat It has a 60 hp. merc. 2002 When the owner started it on the mufs., he called me to tell me the water pump wasn't working at all. Come to find out this boat has been in shallow water on the duck pond. To find out if it has been hot, what all should I check. [Look for paint burnt on the cylinders,] [check comp.] what comp. pressusure at cranking speed? Any other checks? I will be able to run it on the river before I make the final decision. Thanks. Mick in Mo.

First, unless the water pump has been repaired, don't run it on the river or otherwise. It will still overheat. Take a piece of wire with you and probe the tell tale (it may just be plugged). Do a compression check -- don't take the sellers word for it unless he can show you dated work order with compression readings within days of your arrival.

Thanks a bunch. I did a compresion check. It has 125 lbs. on all 3 cylenders. I just got through instaling a new impeler. [ In the water pump] The end plates were groved some but the dealer near here didn't have any end plates so I just put in a new impeler and gasket. I'll put it in a tank before I go to the big muddy. Is 125 lbs comp enough? Thay were all even

Thanks again. I ran the mtr. in a big trash can. it started good, and as soon as it got cleaned out a bit it ran fine. The pee tube was full of sand. now it puts out a small stream at idle speed. I never put it in gear in the can. I think it's going to be fine. It has the scag broken off should the lower unit be striped to weld a new one one? [What a site] If I were a bit better at this typing thing it would be alot easier. I read alot of the posts. we never get to old to learn. Sometimes we can win one.

If you are going to keep running it in sand and rocks in the duck pond, why bother, you really don't need it there. If you are concerned, buy a skeg guard and bolt it on.

No Gary It won't be in the duck pond again. I am the new owner. And I don't hunt those little ducklings. I fish the big muddy Mo. river. I had it in the river today, and it seemed to run good. The pee tube kept pluging with sand. There must have ben a bunch in there somplace. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to take off the side plate on the block, and try to flush out the sand. I have no idea if or how much sand is in it.
