I'm trying to change out my water pump. How do I get the shaft or shifter to release so that I can drop the foot. The bolts are all out but it still wont drop. I appreciate any help.

Hi
Remember there are 6 bolts below and one nut above the flange ! If you got all bolts out, maybee the drive shaft is stuck in crankshaft. Try to wrincke with the lower unit. See the post conc. Mercury 40HP, the last days.

The rod connection is under a small cover at the one side of the upper leg. The cover sits with two screws, be carefull, they sometimes break. You will need a new gasket for the cover. To disasemble the rod, loosen both bolts on the connection and remove the lower bolt totally. It is easyer if motor is in neutral.

Thanks G DANE
All the bolts are definately out. The lower unit will drop down about an inch but no lower. Fellow told me there is a "quick release" somewhere around where the shifter pokes through but **** if I can find it.

He is talking about the newer type of 25 and 35 HP. On your you have to remove the little cover. Good luck.

You were on the money G DANE. I took the cover off and loosened the bolt. I can see the shaft moving so its loose there, but it is still hanging up. Maybe the drive shaft is froze up. I hate to get too rough with it but its starting to **** me off.

Vbass Good you are improving

You have to take the lower bolt out, not just loosen. The shaft has an edge in it, so it wount split if the bolt gets loose.

If the driveshaft was stuck, i dont think you could lover the gear unit more than 1/16 or do.

Make a little test.

Lower the gear unit as much as possible.
Look if the shift lever moves when you do.
Try to turn the shift lever back - if it lifts the gear unit up, it is the shifting rod that keeps you from getting lower unit down !

G Dane you are the man. I took the bolt out and the foot fell off. Much thanks. Its a long way from here to Denmark but if you ever make it to east Texas I'll buy you a cold one.
