Water Pump Kit or Just Impeller?

I want to replace the impeller in a '62 Fastwin I just bought. I see that there are just the impellers and then the whole kits available. What would tell me that I need the kit vs. just replacing the impeller? Impellers are about $18 and the kits are about $60.

Pull the lower unit and check the water pump housing. If it's not worn/pitted/cracked then all you need is the impeller.

I agree with above. I have never bought a kit yet. Just impellers. Mind you I don't have anything old. Just 71 and above LOL. I must be lucky cause I think they do sell lots of kits. Best of luck. Rick.

Rick, you must run in clear, fresh water. In salt bays, silted rivers, etc., kits are the norm.

If the wear plate is grooved, another reason for the kit. Most pump I have done have been kits and I hate to think of how many.

Very good point, which I had not considered. You are right, I only fish freshwater lakes and no rivers with my boat. Thanks for bringing up a different set of circumstances. Rick.
