water pump issue

Hi All,

I have been noticing an issue with my water pump latley. I changed it out in the winter months and used the boat 3 times so far. Did not notice any issues out on the water. Today I wanted to turn it on because it hasn't been used in over two moths and noticed after it turns on it bareley spits any water out while using ear muffs. After I put it in gear and go up to 1500 rpm the water starts to gush out and when I go back to neutral it is a bit better but not the way it shoud be

I have there videos

After it turns on - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-iFNfvGmSY&feature=youtu.be
@ 1500 RPM - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eAS119sxzo&feature=youtu.be
Back to neural after 1500 rpm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjYGrWGnYcA&feature=youtu.be

should I take it apart and take a look? I thought there might be something clogging the lines but wouldn't that be the case also when it's in gear at 1500 rpm? If I have to take it apart what should I look for? Clearly something is not right..

Thanks in advance
Zipp

looks pretty normal to me, as long as the water is not super hot you should be OK. Does that motor have a thermostat? if it does you might want to have a look at that. If you do so and it is clean, see what the temp is on it and throw it in a pot of hot water to see if it opens. Do not run the motor with out a thermo, they are designed to run at a certain temp, without one, they run too cool and are not as efficient

I don't think this one has a thermostat. Did they make thermostats for outboards in 1974?

Yes, but not this Merc

Yes, they did. But not for this Merc model

hmmm how can I tell if it has a thermostat?

It doesn't have one. Here is the list of thermostats for Mercury 50's and you serial number isn't in the list. I had to guess at your serial number, is it in this range? 3816308 - 4140999

Put the boat in the lake and see how well it works. Muffs are not the way to verify a working water pump because the water is pressurized by the hose. In the water the impeller is doing all the pumping.

Usually on the bottom of the pellet part of the stat is stamped a number. That is the opening temp in degrees F. As the temperature of the water in the powerhead increases over the next 10 to 15 degrees the stat will continue to open more with the increase in temp till full open. Mercs are stamped 143 F that I have seen.

You can put your hand on the block while running. For a reference, a domestic US hot water heater set to Normal is at 140F. On engines with over temp alarms, they go off at 195F. Your automobile/truck runs somewhere around 195-210F range for another reference. A $40 non-contact infrared temp gun at Harbor Freight will tell you exactly at what temp your engine is running if really worried and it's handy to have around for other things. Mine gets used frequently.

Got any dirt dobbers in your area? They love to plug little holes including baler water exit holes in your boat and others like to crawl in your engine and build a mud nest in your sound box (if you have one) which covers your carb inputs.

OK I will take it to a lake and see how it does. Maybe it will perform just fine..
