Water pump issue

I just installed a new water pump assy' and it isn't seated all of the way around the housing against the metal base plate. It is only in one spot. Could this be caused by the metal cup insert not being fully seated against the housing? Also, how difficult should it be to spin the driveshaft once the water pump is installed? Thanks!

No clues whatso ever as to the model!

Different models have O rings in different places check with the exploded diagram in the patrs catalog http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e that you hav everything in the right place.

You have not put an O ring where it should not be that is preventing the cup going fully into the housing?

The drive shaft should turn but not spin freely.

Re: Water pump issue

If it is your 1985 150, the housing should have a rubber seal and the housing should seat firmly on the plate and be watertight.

The newer OEM impellers have a single recess at the bottom for a fat o-ring and it only works with that recess facing downward.

My experience has been that the new impeller can be hard to turn initially on the larger gearcases. I use a little gear oil or liquid soap to lubricate it; that makes installing the housing much easier as well.

Re: Water pump issue

Sorry about that...it is E150STLCO. 1985 150. It is the new style housing. It has a small o-ring that goes inside the housing under the metal insert, also has a large odd shape o-ring for the base of the housing that rest against the plate. The impeller does have the groove and it is installed facing down toward the gearcase but, it does not have an o-ring. Followed the manual to the T I thought and it is the original service manual purchased throught Ken Cook. The o-ring seems seated against the plate, however, there is a small gap next to the starboard side fwd bolt??? Thanks everyone for your replies!!

Click the thumbnail for the diagram for the current OMC/BRP kit.

Older kits and some aftermarket ones don't have the bottom o-ring.

Re: Water pump issue

My kit didn't come with that o-ring unless it is the one that I put on top of the grommet that goes over the crankshaft...Still wondering what would cause the housing to keep from seating correctly. Should I just remove it all and try again?
