I have a 5 HP Honda Outboard Longshaft model BF5A that's not pumping out water. I replaced the impeller and seal and still not pumping water. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..........

Re: Water Pump Issue - Water NOT pumping out

I don't know anything specific about this motor, so you may need to wait for someine else, but...

when you put the new pump in, did you make sure the impeller was locked to the drive shaft so must turn when the motor is running?

Is the pipe up to the engine slipped into the top of the pump housing?

And..if you take it apart to check, shove a hose on the pump tube and make sure water can go up the tube, fill up the block and come off the top of the block someplace. Water usually fills the block and dumps out in a large flow, sometimes after going through a thermostat, and also squirts out a pee tube which should flow regardless of whether the thermostat is open or shut.
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply.

I did check to make sure the impeller was installed on the shaft correctly and it is. I thought your idea of testing the tube with a water hose was a good one. I'll do that next.

I've also pulled the housing apart again and I can't locate a hole for the water to pass from where the impeller pulls the water in, to the tube leading to the engine. The impeller housing had a lot of gunk in it so I'm wondering if the passage may be clogged at that point. I can't seem to find where the passage should be located in the housing, though. Any ideas? Thanks again for your reply.

Re: Water Pump Issue - Water NOT pumping out

hello again
remember, I don't know this engine, but it sounds like you are well on your way to learning about it. There shouldn't be a lot of stuff in the water pump housing, usually there are just some water pick up holes in the gear case just below where the water pump sits, they are angled forward so there is a ram effect as the motor goes forward. If the water pump is in two parts the intake comes up through the base, but if you pull out the base, often the bearings and access to the gear case is right there, so you have to be careful not to get dirt down there, and you shouldn't need to pull out the base to see whether the intake holes in the housing are plugged.
