Ok, I have now decided that the guy that put the new water pump on my motor did it incorrectly. What are the usual mistakes? I have read stuff here about the impeller fins going backwards or having a plate on wrong. The water pump is brand new and not pumping water up to the head at all and it is fitting in the copper tube that runs to the head. Please help

Re: water pump installation !!!!

Hi Lee
How do you know it was installed improperly? How do you know it was ever done in the first place? Isn't it kind of hard to tell if something is wrong when you don't know what right is? I suggest you obtain a manual and read up on the cooling system for your motor. The water pump may be fine. You may have a problem with a T-stat or leaking gromets, it could be several things. It makes it even more difficult to diagnos your problem when you don't give model and hp info. You can't just go around deciding things, you gotta have facts.

Ok, its a 7.5 hp 1983 Johnson. I was there to see the new water pump installed. I have blown through the cooling system with an airhose to make sure it isnt clogged. We took the thermostat out to make sure it wasnt the problem. Looked at head gaskets and they were fine and replaced.

Lee5267 It seems to me that if you Paid this guy to put the water pump on? Bring it to him to fix it he did it wrong. If this isn't the case and you and your buddy did it together. Do it again. You probally missed the water tube when you put it back together. Its really kinda hard to put it
( the water pump ) together wrong it only goes together one way. You could forget the drive pin or key or missed the tube! Almost all water pumps impellas today have no right direction to be installed, but after they run in one direction they can't be run or even turned the opposite way without beeing dammaged!
steve

Hey Lee,
Wassapnin? These motors are infamous for having the grommet between the powerhead and leg, turn sideways and swell, causing blockage. I know you said you used an air hose to blow through the water tube. Instead, try connecting a small hose to the water tube and use lung pressure. Should be fairly easy to blow through. Just a suggestion... Good luck!

I'm not exactly sure what water hose you meant to blow through but I tried blowing through the tube that water would actually be shooting from and it was rather difficult. I could get some air to pass just not easily at all. This what you wanted me to do?

Lee5267

I dont know if this will help or not, so here it goes any way. Last year I had the dealer to replace my water pump on my 93 25hp Jon, and the water would not come out of the pisser hose, and he worked on it for about a month and the prob was a cracked exuast plate, it was causing back pressure to where the water would not flow. Hope this will help.

CatCruzer
