Water Pump Installation Question

I have a 1994 150 Johnson FastStrike motor (model J150GLERV) that I will be putting a new water pump kit in soon. I have never done this. I did purchase the OEM manual and have a question about installing the lower unit after I hopefully install the water pump kit. In the manual, it refers to two seals around the exhaust housing and says to replace these seals when reinstalling the lower unit. In all the posts I have read, I have never heard these seals mentioned in the water pump installation questions. Is it imperative to replace these two seals? I know if they are damaged or there is anything other obviously wrong with them, it would be a nobrainer to replace or not. I have everything I need to tackle this job except these two seals. Cost of these seals is not the issue. I just don't have a dealer close by to get them from. The nearest dealer is about 40 miles away and if I don't need to replace them I won't. Also, if anyone knows the part numbers of these two seals, I would appreciate that info. I went to the ishopmarine.com site and it looks like they would be part numbers 0320936 and 0320961, but I am only guessing. I just ordered some stuff from them and would have ordered these two seals at that time if I had read the manual in better detail before I ordered. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

Re: Water Pump Installation Question

I just replace the pump on my fast strike and my seals looked like new, mine is a 96 so you probably wont need to replace them. There is one way to find out, rip that sucker apart.. It is simple to replace pump if you have a manual.

Thanks for the response, sikpnter. Do you have any secrets from your experience that might help me? I guess I will learn as I go. I do have the manual. Did you have any problem disconnecting the shift linkage? The manual makes it look like you just put it in forward and then pull a clip and push the linkage back toward the motor. I suppose it is kinda tight to get to and probably not easy to hook back up. I am going to do it by the book right down to the omc products called for. Thanks again for the response.

Disconnecting the shift shaft is easy, its getting it back in that was a little tricky just dont touch the shift shaft at all while the lower unit is off, dont let it turn or it will throw of your gears. It should go right back in where it came. Also just make sure you put gasket adhesive where is says and triple guard grease where it says and any other goofy lube that it says to use.. If you bought a factory pump it will come with some moly lube which you put on the drive shaft splines for reassembly just the splines thought, not on top of the drive shaft. got a torque wrench? one more thing is make sure the water tube hits its hole when reassembling lower unit, other than that you should be fine. if you can have someone stand by to hold the lower unit when dropping and putting on. I had fun doing mine and was amazed by how small in diameter the drive shaft is I thought it would be bigger, anyway if you have any problem this is the BEST site for that, good luck

Re: Water Pump Installation Question

Thanks again, sikpnter. I take it you had your motor tilted when you slipped the lower unit off for clearance reasons. That probably doesn't help in lining things up either. I have a fishing buddy that is also retired like me that said he would help me. Another set of hands and another brain can't hurt anything. The only product I don't have that it says to use is the needle bearing grease for holding the impeller key on the driveshaft. I thought I could probably get by with vasoline as I think it is only to hold it in place until you get everything together. Thanks again for your help. I had motor since it was new and it has very low hours on it. So, I think everything should be ok.

Thanks!!
