Water Pump Inline Tube Missing?

Hi everyone, I'm new to boating and I was hoping if anyone could help me. I recently purchased a 1990 90HP Force outboard motor and everytime I take it out after awhile I would see steam coming out of the pee holes in the back of the motor. Then the motor would die. I changed the thermostate thinking that it's not working, but still the problem continue. So yesterday I took the lower unit (gear housing) off to check the water pump. I found a piece of broken black rubber in the pump. I thought it was a piece from the impeller but after closer look it wasn't the impeller. I guess someone before me replaced the impeller and forgot to check to make sure that the broken part from the old impeller was out. So I removed the rubber piece. My question is that I don't see any tube or anything connecting from the water pump to the upper unit except for the driveshaft. Is the water pump that strong to just force the water up? I don't think this is it because some of the water will go straight out at the exhaust snout. Am I right? There has to be a tube or something. But I dont' see any there, could it be that some mechanic before me forgot to replace the tube when he replaced the impeller? I'm pretty sure I'm very close to fixing this problem. Could anyone help me? Thanks ahead.

Oh I forgot to mention I can't tell what model the motor is because I think the metal plate on the transome mount was removed.

The id plate was the only place that carried the serial number and the model number. Only way to id it now is to get a Clymer repair manual and compare the photos and descriptions to what you have. The main differences in the 90hp from the early 90's were the ignition systems, lower units, and fuel pumps.

Yes there should be a water tube that connects the water pump to the base of the powerhead. There are also rubber seals at each end of the water tube, and a grommet at the top also.
You can get them from any Mercury dealer.

Oh yeah, welcome to iboats.
Good Luck with the motor.
Keep us posted with your progress.

Thanks roscoe. I'm going to have to buy the tube and the seals. But I'm not sure if I should buy the 20" or 25" tube. Could you possibly help me out with this? I have the motor serial # off of the registration which is 016121. Maybe this could narrow down what model the motor is?

Also if the motor been running without the water tube how is the water getting into the power head? Is the impeller that strong to force the water into the power head without the tube? Just a curious question.

It seem like every Mercury dealer I talk to about getting part of a Force motor they try to shut me up and tell me they don't carry anything for a Force motor, Period. What's the deal? I tried to give them the part # off the www.mercruiserparts.com site and still they tell me they don't carry anything for a Force motor. Do I have to tell them that I have a Mercury motor in order for them to even look up the part # for me?

If you have a 20" transom on your boat, you should have a 20" motor. Some dealers are just priks, and don't know their product line well enough to serve you properly. They won't deal with you cause "there isn't enough money in it for them." So instead they will stand around and make no money while they talk about the ballgame and eat donuts.

Mercruiserparts ( a Merc dealer) found a way to take advantage of the other dealers bad attitudes and lack of knowledge.

I would tell them that if their service is so poor, and your money is no good there, that you will need to buy your new boat elsewhere.

Here is a site with parts diagrams for 90hp models and links to exploded parts diagrams. Hopefully they will help you to id it.
mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=823424
Keep us posted.

This is probably a stupid question but where is the transom? Is it the part on the back of the boat where the motor is attached to the boat? And do I measure from one end to the other to get the 20"?

Look for Bayliner dealer....they should be able to do old Force parts, or ask independent shops. BUT...ARE YOU SURE YOU LOOKED UP INTO THE MIDDLE HOUSING? The tube should still be stuck in the powerhead. And the 20-25 is measured from the flat bottom part of the clamp that sits on the transom, to the top of the anti-ventilation plate (big flat one)...and ..."broken black rubber in the pump" ..would for sure block water
