I have a 1971 50HP evinrude model# 50173s and serial# 07812. I was told that there was an opening towards the top of the engine to let me visually see that the water pump was working properly. The spot that I was told to look in has a hole that goes to the outside of the engine housing but it appears to be just a bolt hole. The engine runs fine but there is no indication to visually see water being pumped through the engine. I have ran the engine for hours and it remains cool to the touch. Should this bolt be hollow or does my engine not have this indicator?

Re: Water Pump Indicator

It didn't come with one from the factory but you can easily install one. The dealer who sells you the parts can show you where to put the fitting (331894). Run a hose from the fitting to the pan grommet (320521) or nipple (321885).

Good luck!
