You guys that helped me deserve a beer. I was a total rookie to doing anything on my boat motor and with your help this weekend I put in a new water pump and it cured a overheating problem I have been having for over a year.

The motor has never pee-ed so good and it was a warm pee, not the piping hot shat that was coming out before.

Thanks a million!!!!

Re: Water pump impeller success!!!

no problem seen except the gaskets look like they may have blown. the blades on the impeller will bend into that position after many hours of use and it looks like it is time for replacement. the impeller will take proper shape when you fit it inside the housing, just be sure and place them (blades) in the same direction as the old pump ( the bend in the impeller) if the blades are pointing in the wrong direction it could damage the impeller as soon as you start the engine.(hint- silicone lube is a perfect break in lube for the few seconds before water reaches the pump.

Re: Water pump impeller success!!!

The kit I got from the Merc dealer came with alot of misc. gaskets and O rings, but I can't find any in the motor or on the blow up diagram. So far I am only replacing what I see is coming out...........sound alright?

g8orb8,
Thank you!!!!!! I am going to go put it back together and pray that all is well.

There are usually some extra parts in the kit for different HP using same impeller like drive shaft seals etc. g8orb8 is right, the impeller will bend to fit the cup. Looks like you replaced it at the right time. PS Great pics...

Do you think those blown gaskets could be the reason for all the water that was in the lower unit when I took it off this morning? Could it be the reason the overheating alarm has been going off?

From the look of the gaskets the previous 'mechanic' was a total clutz..... The impeller is 'larger' than the housing because of the way they work. The new one will have straight blades and appear to be too big. It isn't. A new one will get the same type of 'set' after a few weeks. The extra 'o'rings ect are for other models of engine. These kits are suitable for a variety of motors. The old impeller actually appears ok, but since you have the kit, replace it. And don't forget the key that secures it to the driveshaft. (You'd be surprised how many people do!)

Chris.............

Re: Water pump impeller success!!!

I saved the old impeller just in case. There is a bushing on the drive shaft, it sits atop the water pump cover, I think it was called a slinger of some kind. That wasn't even there when I took it apart today. I made sure it was there when I put it back together. I hope this works..........

hey, the manual said to torque those bolts to 50 foot pounds, I took them to 25 and it was cutting plastic..........I thought the cover was going to crack. 50 foot lbs?

In reality they got torqued to about 10 ft lbs. 50 inches would be like 4 foot lbs right? I am contemplating taking the darn thing apart and loosening them bolts!!! I am going to put it in the water tomorrow and see what happens.
