I am purchasing a 1970 Johnson 40HP outboard. I was told it needs a water pump impeller. What's involved in replacing it? Could some one with no outboard repair experiance get the job done? Also is there any way for me to check the impeller before I replace it? What else should I check before I make the purchase?

Thanks,
John

Hey jm,
The impeller isn't a big job but you ought to get a manual that covers that motor before you begin. No special tools are needed, just regular automotive type stuff. Before you lay out the $$, run a compression check & take a look at the lower unit oil. A visual inspection of everything under the cowling can give you an idea of the type of care/maintenance it has had. Look for evidence of overheating (discoloration, melted electrical components, etc.) & corrosion as well. :)
Backlash
