HI All

My mechanic just got back to me with a diagnosis of the engine, and has found that I need a new water pump, amongst other things. He wants to charge $300.00 for the water pump, plus $300.00 to fit, plus another $100.00 for a water test, plus the service, change a lower leg seal, pressure test gear case etc. He expects the total to be about $1000.00.

I can wear $100.00 for a water test, heck, even a few hundred for a service/lower leg seal, but I thought that $300 for the part was a bit over the top, and, unless it is a pain in the you know what to fit, $300.00 for labour seemed a bit steep too. He was referred to me and does seem to know his stuff, but any opinions on the cost would be appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Water Pump Force 125

I just purchased the following parts for my 1988 125HP motor on line. Water pump kit, housing and all for $65 (Just the impeller kit is around $25), complete lower unit seal $45, Lower unit pressure tester $70. Your mechanic seems a bit high on price. I've replaced the water pump and seals several times on different lower units successfully with no problems, and I'm nothing special. I never timed it but I would guestimate 2 - 3 hours. There's a couple of "gotcha's" that you have to be aware of that may slow you down. The mechanic that gave you the estimate must be very proud of his work. LOL!

WAY too much. Do it yourself with the instructions found on the sticky Force and Chrysler FAQ at the top of the page.

Do I need to replace the lower seal if I do the water pump?

No you do not have to replace the lower unit seal(s). There are several "O"ring seals and a couple of metal/rubber pressed in seals. If any of these are leaking allowing water to get into the gearcase, then the gears will eventually be damaged.

Thanks

I'll look here on i-boats and get everything I MAY need :) Also, I had been thinking all night about a few things the mechanic said to me.

" It will never be a new boat"
" It will never be 100%"
" It's the nature of the beast "( when talking about stalling on a test hole shot)

I don't know about you, but to me, this is code for " I don't know what I am doing, but if you pay me, I'll see if I can make it run better"

I will attempt the waterpump myself, and see where it leads me, but a 125 force in good nick is still a strong engine, and I can see no reason it won't run for years if I take care of her!

Cheers

You're making the right decision on doing it yourself and saving yourself about $950! First time will probably take you an hour or so but once you do it and go to do it next time you'll zip through it. Dont forget the exhaust snout bolt!!

Re: Water Pump Force 125

Hey all- just a quick thought

How would the mechanic know I need a new waterpump if he hasn't seen it? Could it just need an impellor? Should I take it apart with a new impellor and inspect the waterpump for corrosion etc, or just do the lot in one hit?

Also- other than having a distribuor style ignition system, it is still a 1988 Force 125. Am I looking for Force Spare Parts, Mercury Spares or Chrysler Spares? Or a mix.

Sounds like a silly question, but if a Mercury IMpellor is $30.00, but the SAME thing for a Force is $80.00, doen't take Einstein to do those maths! The reason I ask is because I own a Citroen, if I buy Peuguet Parts, I save about 40%!! Same parts, different price......

When we say water pump were usually talking about the impeller. Inspect the impeller housing first before ordering anything because yours might be fine to use. As far as spare parts you'd be looking for chrysler ignition parts and for any other parts you'd be looking for force parts. Your force shouldn't have a merc. lower unit so you have to get the force part #. I believe the impellers are different. Too bad you missed my ebay auction a month or so ago...I let go of a spare prestolite trigger, stator, and flywheel for $100.

DOH!!

I did a ' buy it now' on the item listed from Pan84. The best price I could get in Sydney was $293.00 for a complete kit. I know I may not need one- an impellor may have done, but I thought Whilst it is open, I might as well replace the lot! The buy it now was just $55.00.

Looking forward to hooking in now- I'll see how I go!!
