Water pump base removal: Force 75 1997

How do you remove the pump base/ shaft seal carrier from the lower unit of the motor?
I'm having a hard time removing it.

Can someone please help me?

Are you referring to item 8 in the diagram below?

If so, there is a special tool P/N FT-11293 to remove it. Looks like it's screwed in. Maybe some of the more experienced folks here know of a way to remove it without the special tool?

Yes, I'm referring to item 8 in that diagram.
Unfortunately, I already broke the pump base trying to remove it. I guess it was in need of a new one anyway. I've ordered a new one.
