Hello,

Could someone please tell me how hard it is to change a water pump on a 5.0 Volvo outdrive? Is there anyplace on the this site or the web that would have a drawing?

The boat was on a lift over the winter and the outdrive
slip and was in the water for a long period of time. Could this cause to my over heating problem?

Thanks

Greg

Welcome to iboats.....;)
If you could post the year or better yet the serial # of your engine, it would help to identify your specifc drive.........;
A worn or damaged impeller will cause overheating.....;)

No matter what year you have, it will be relatively easy(depending on your mechanical abilities) becasue the raw water pump is in the engine compartment. It will either be mounted on the front of the crankshaft or belt driven off of a pulley.

When was the last time you changed the impeller?

What are the symtoms of the overheat?

Thanks for the input.

I have not changed the impeller. Is there anyway to make sure it is the impeller or the water pump?

I just started the motor yesterday, I let it idle for a short time, I notice some vapor on the port side of the engine and the temp guage started to climb. I turned it off. The motor also smelled hot.

Thanks
Greg

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

Maybe we need to back up and define some terms here.

You have two water pumps. One is mounted on the block like a normal automotive engine and is called the circulating pump. Its job is to circulate the water within the block and thermostat housing. It is identical to the automotove version except that it has been marinized so it won't corrode.

The other is called the raw water pump. Its purpose is to bring water up through the drive up to the thermostat housing. That water is both circulated through the engine and sent to the exhaust manifolds and risers to cool them. On a Volvo, depending on the year, this water pump is mounted on the crankshaft or belt driven.

Typically, you will overheat if the raw water pump is faulty. Its impleller is rubber and should be replace everyother year because the blades harden, crack and loose there shape.

I strongly sugggets that you buy a Volvo service manual. Buy a Volvo one, not a Clymer or a Seloc.

I will buy the Volvo Manual. My original question was concening the raw water pump. I was wondering how hard this one is to change.

Thanks

That is what I thought you were asking but when you said "Is there anyway to make sure it is the impeller or the water pump?", I wasn't sure.

Typically, you change the rubber impeller that is inside the raw water pump. The whole pump housing usually lasts a long time.

What is the model number of your Volvo?

The motor is a 5.0FL

The outdrive info:
Ratio: 166
SXS, I think this is the model
SS# 4112005059

The boat is on a lift and I got this information late yesterday afternoon.

Is there anyway to decide if the problem is with the impeller or the water pump?

Thanks for your help

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

How long has it been since you changed the impeller in your raw water pump? If it's been over two years, I would just change that.

The raw water pump housing does not fail that often and when it does, it is because it leaks or gets worn inside. You will have to take the impeller out anyway to see if it is worn.

Your drive must be one of the early SX drives if it is an FL(Ford Engine). Those should have the belt driven raw water pump.

Your complete model number should look like:
5.0FLPMDCS or 5.0FLPHUCS or something like that. The P will be there if you have power steering, M if not and the next 2 letters will indicate the model year run. The letter after that will be random and the last letter will be an S. You need this model number when you order parts.

This is the most likely cause of your overheating problem but it is not the only one. You could have clogged risers/manifolds if you boat in salt water or have other restrictions.

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

Bruce,

I have not changed the impeller in the three years we have owned the boat.

I assume I have to take the foot off to get to the impeller correct? I do not have my manual yet. Don't laugh but since the boat is on a lift, I am thinking about taking a Jon boat and put it up under the boat and change the impeller. How heavy is the foot?

Have you ever used the Selco online manual?

Thanks
Greg

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

Greg,

It is belt driven or crankshaft drivenon Volvos in the engine compartment. Yours will be belt driven.

Look at your engine. It will be mounted on the starboard side of the engine down low with two hoses coming off of it.

Don't waste your time with the Seloc manual...buy a Volvo one.

You can get one here:

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/volvo/

Note that the model number that I was telling you in the previous post needs to match up with the manual.

You could look at the online manual just to familiarize yourself.......
A Seloc is better than nothing......;)

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

Thanks, I will be going back to the boat tonight to get the complete SS#.

By your posts you think I should start with the impeller in the raw water pump and not the impeller on the foot correct?

If you opened the drain plugs on the manifold and started the motor would you have water coming out if the impeller on the raw water pump was bad?

Again Thanks

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

Greg....You DO NOT have a raw water pump impeller in the drive/foot. It is located on the lower right hand/starboard side of your engine like in the pic Bruce posted for you. Look at part # 60 in the diagram.

Re: Water Pump 5.0 Volvo

I am tracking with the location of the raw water impeller.

I am trying to determine how hard of a job it would be to replace the one in the foot, if the raw water impeller is not bad.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks
