Ok next year I plan on building some re inforced cedar planting boxes. Cedar is my favorite wood and they will match my siding Plus I have a ton of it.

Problem:
They MUST be Water proof on the inside! And the liner Non Toxic as I will be growing food in them as well as flowers.

I need to be able to either spray, brush, or roll it in them

I have thought of Line-x or Plasti Dip
But I dont know if they would leach toxic stuff into the watering system.

Anyone have some idea or can point in the right direction to find some?

Thanks
Link

I would get the size plastic flower box desired and build the cedar boxes around that size. The boxes you make will hold up much better over the years without the soil contact.I learned the hard way.Ruined all of mine w/o the plastic box.Charlie

Dang Charley you beat me to it. I did what you say also, I also made sure to put something like thompsons water seal under them though and drilled 1" holes on the bottom of the cedar boxes and left the side panels with about a 1/4" air space around the sides so it could breath under the plastic pots. Build up a support under the pot so that it rests on the bottom and not just on the plastic lip around the edge. I take the plastic boxes out every fall, let it all dry out and resealed with thompsons and they are going on there 16th year with no rot. Depending on if you have a place to store them, you may concider buying an extra set of plastic boxes, they will not last as long as the cedar will in the sun, and you may not be able to find the same exact ones if one gets a crack in it, I was lucky and found some after the first ten years.

I'm thinking maybe lining them with fiberglass and resin twice. Should be easy and cheap enoufgh.

The pot Idea wins hands down, you can remove them, repot, change them around, turn them into the sun if the plant is growing the wrong way or face the blooms a certain way, and you can dump the dirt easily. Its the way to go.

Link........

You might try melting wax and brushing the interior of the box with a paint brush. I think this would be a non-toxic way of sealing the wood. You might use wax used for canning fruit's and vegetables.

...Bob in Calif... "The state of many fruit's"

You guys are missing the point.Treating it or covering it will only postpone the rot and mildew.Having the plastic liner pot which will be removed and allow the cedar to be dried out and stored inside in the off season is the key to eliminating the chance of rot and mildew.By the way,the liner pots are also the cheapest and cleanest and easiest way to achieve what you want.No Brainer !! ;)

The reason I seal the inside of mine is that my planters are built right into the deck and like I said, they are like new after 16+ years, has to be the only way to go.

And Bob in calif: Thompsons is pretty much wax anyway, and pentrates much better. There are lots of other products that may be better but I bought a five gallon can of it and still have about half of it left.
