I see the term water pressure mentioned in several posts but I cannot find what it is or how it is measured. Would someone explain the term to me and explain why it is important?

Re: Water pressure?

Fluctuations in water pressure are an indication that something is not right with your cooling system. If you are getting fluctuations, you could be in danger of burning up your motor. A bad impeller, bad water pump, clogged water pick-up's, or having the motor too high can lead to poor or fluctuating water pressure. You can measure water pressure using a gauge on your dash. Gauges are sold just about anywhere you can buy boat parts, including here on Iboats. Installation is very simple. The actual pressure you read on the gauge can vary by boat/motor. For the most part, the actual pressure reading is not that important. What you really want to look for is fluctuations in pressure. After you have the gauge for a while you get a good feel for what your baseline readings are at various RPM's. Once your pressure readings deviate from the norm, you know you need to start investigating cooling problems.
