I have a 1993 24ft. Celebrity Cuddy engine is a 350 mag.
1st year i had it every thing was fine started every time i ran it.
At the beginning of spring this year i tried to start it and nothing but alot of thumping. I pulled spark plug and had water pour out of a couple of holes dried everything off got all the water out started right up. No water in oil!
I ran it on the river for most off the day after that i checked the oil still no water. Everything seem to be fine used it 2 more times. It set for a week
went to take it out same thing happened water on cylinders call local boat mechanic and he said it was blow back. This happened to me 3 times over this summer in order for this not to happen i had to drain the block and manifold. Boat run great no missing or ruffness anywhere. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

The exhaust riser joints are failing. You need to pull the risers and inspect both the risers, and the manifolds. Depending on how bad they all look you will need new risers, or both new risers and new manifolds. This is done on both sides. For example if you choose to replace the left side, you need to do the right as well.

Sounds like a possible head gasket issue. Not all cases of blown head gaskets end up with water in the oil.

Or, it could be running back in the cylinders though the open exhaust valves from the exhaust manifolds where the colling water exits with the exhaust. That is probably the more likely cause. Maybe some of the I/O owers can tell you what to do to fix it. It is possible that new manifolds are in order...

Jason beat me by a couple of minutes, but confirmed I was on the right track with the manifolds and risers...

I pulled manifolds and they looked fine no cracks but did not check the risers i'll have to do that. I'ts just got me baffled. One day it's fine next day pullin plugs. What would i be looking for when i pull the risers ? Bad gaskets, cracks, rust, etc?

:D They say the best day for a boat is the day you buy it and the day you sell it.

Hello Hallo, ;)

you really cannot tell if the manifolds have cracks. The cracks would be on the inside.

More than likely, your riser gaskets have failed or the risers and/or manifolds are leaking right where the gaskets seal and have failed the point where the gaskets can no longer seal. (The risers should be removed every couple years and the gaskets replaced)

You could fill the manifolds and risers with water (off the engine and before you break them apart) with the manifold/riser combination in the same relative position as on the engine and see if water comes out the exhaust flanges where they bolt to the engine.

You didn't say, but is this a raw water cooled engine?

Salt or fresh usage?

How long have the manifolds been on the engine?

Have you ever removed the risers and inspected the gaskets?

Rick

All of the above. If you do a search you'll see pictures on here of what is good, and what is bad. What your looking for is the amount of meat left in the metal inbetween the cooling passages, and the exhaust passages. Needs to be 1/4 inch of good solid shiney pit free cast iron. The cooling passages on the joint, and on the discharge ports need to be clean as well, and not all clogged up with old rusty metal.

Did you winterize the engine last year? have the manifolds pressure tested
