Water not pumping ?

My motor is a 1986 35hp Force.

Most of the motors I'm associated with are Jetdrive which have a (pisser hose)so you can visually see the motor is pumping water.

Where would I look on my motor? far as I can tell it's not pumping. I've pulled the lower unit & the impeller has some roughness to the bottom side but other than that it seems to me to be ok.

What else could keep it from pumping. :) :)

Re: Water not pumping ?

What makes you think its not pumping?
Run the motor and feel the head should be to hot to hold your hand on but not burn.
You should get yourself a manual before you do any repairs. They are available at the library,amazon.com,the tab at the top of the page
NAPA,ebay,etc.

Steelespike

I have a manual coming. I felt the top of the head while it was running & it seemed like it was hotter than it should be. Thats why I wanted to know if there is a visual way to check to see if its pumping

Re: Water not pumping ?

You should see a heavy spray of water out of the exhaust port on the rear of the leg. I don't think your motor has a tell-tale, but could be wrong about that. If you can hold your hand or fingers on the top of the head for a few seconds, it's probably not overheating. If you can't touch the top of the head without getting burned, it's definitely running too hot.

You might take out the thermostat after you get your manual and see if it runs cooler. If so, you probably need to replace the t.stat (likely not opening).

Re: Water not pumping ?

My suggestion is to pull the lower unit again, and replace the worn impeller -- also the wearplate unless it's perfectly smooth. When reinstalling, make sure the wearplate and housing is fully sealed, and spread a little bit of grease on the wearplate. Make sure the water tube coming up from the impeller is clear.

While the lower unit is off, I would also force some water up through the bottom of the water tube attached to the head. Insure that the water comes out the exhaust port. If you want to go a step further, you can take off the head and inspect/clean out the water passages. You can also remove the exhaust port cover on the left (?) side of the block and clean out the water passages there. And if you open everything up, force water through as part of the cleaning. You will need a couple of gaskets for the exhaust cover, but you might be able to get my with reusing the head cover gasket. Use some gasket sealer (I use the OMC sealer.)

(By the way, you can do one more check before taking things apart. If there is no thermostat, you can crank the engine with the t.stat cover removed and see if there is water coming out there. This will at least tell you if water is being pumped to the head.)

Good luck.

oldboat1
I did as you said & started motor with the t.stat cover off and not a drop of water came out.

So am I not getting water to the head or thru the head?

Re: Water not pumping ?

sounds like progress. You know now there is either a blockage, or the pump isn't operating. It would help if you had a diagram of the water circulation system for your motor, but I think I would start troubleshooting from the bottom (the impeller), and work up.
