You could simply have a bad thermostat housing gasket. Where is the housing on these motors?

Under that 4 bolt housing is the thermostat and a water bypass valve assy. The diaphram of the bypass valve needs to be replaced. Add a little sealer to the edge of it when reinstalling.

If things in there are pretty well salted up, it might be a good idea to replace both diaphrams along with the thermostats.

Do you mean the pressure releif valve? I appreciate your response. I just want to make sure I get the right parts. It is number 56 on evinrude.com parts breakdown of an 87 xp150 cylinder and crankcase diagram.

Your leak is probably from part number 321184, the thermostat cover gasket. It is designed to flex when running. I'd agree with Joe that it is better named a diaphram.

For clarification.... Is that a crossflow or a looper engine?

0321221 is the actual diaphram pressure relief seal. 0321184 is just the thin gasket that goes under the thermostat cover. I got in some grass last year and got it hot. Pretty much anything that was nylon, including the ptessure releif valve melted. I purchased two thermostat
rebuild kits brom basic power. It needed them. Thanks for every ones help. I am grateful.
