All,

1976 6 Cylinder 165 - Alpha One Gen One

Just had my lower unit off. While it was off, replaced the impeller. In addition, I read online that the shift shaft has a water drain hole that is located on the right side slightly above the the nose cone.

I found this drain hole, and the passageway had TONS of gunk from years of build up. So while I had the lower unit off, I cleaned out the passageway and now it drains REALLY good.

Last night I re-attached the lower unit to the upper unit. Filled it with gear fluid. Then put the flush cuffs on and started it up.

Question 1) I immidiately noticed that the shift shaft drain hole that I cleaned out was draining a lot of water. (See picture) Is this normal? I have nothing to compare it to because previously it was clogged.

Question 2) I also noticed that there was some water draining out around the shift shaft coupler in the upper area where the arm is that spins in the upper unit. (See picture in the general area where arrow is pointing) Is this normal?

looks normal to me...

my '75 mc-1 drive on the hose... this is what i consider normal for me...

i think i can be normal for the water to come out the shift shaft area too. there's no seals in that area. it's filled with water.

looks like ya got some pretty good water pressure there on the hose. lots of water coming out the cups of the flusher compared to mine. note, most of the water is being sucked up by the impeller in my pic. might just be you got great water pressure at the house. maybe i don't... mine could be low as i can't fill the washer and run the boat at the same time. not enough flow from the hose to keep my engine cool.

your pic of the shift shaft looks like a gen II.

i'd think ya got a mc-1 if yers is a '76. not that it makes any difference for what your describing though... ;)

Ya, definitly have tons of water pressure at the house, no problem running the house and filling dish washer and filling washing machine and showering all at the same time LOL.

I thought it was okay, just wanted to double check. Plus with having just cleaned it all out I think that leads even more to it having a good flow out of it.

Just wanted to make sure this wasn't an indication of the impeller not being sealed right or something else.

PS - Yep, I know that was gen 2, was just conceptual versus trying to describe it. I took it from another post where someone was trying to describe similar water leaking out of the top of their shift shaft. But that post didn't address the drain hole thing and so still wanted to post to confirm.

Thank you very much!
