Water intrusion on cuffs.

I just replaced the gear oil in my 58' Evinrude Big Twin 35 HP and ran the motor on cuffs while trying to find another problem.

I took the top oil screw out to check the oil because there was some oil coming out of the water bypass cover.

The oil which had been filled to about 1/16" below the check screw, started pouring out of the hole and appeared milky.

The gearcase does not leak at the skeg, drive shaft, or anywhere else on the lower end.

Could this be the driveshaft oil retainer seal that has gone bad? Are there other seals that go between the cooling water and gear oil?

Im going to assume you ment propshaft, because the driveshaft has seals under the waterpump, there are shift shaft seals. The best way to check is to rig up a pressue pump, with the gearcase off ,waterpump out ,and use soapy water to find any air that may be escaping, like you would a tire.Thats how they do it in the shops.Otherwise you either do a complete seal ,procedure ,or take a shot one at a time til you get it

Re: Water intrusion on cuffs.

I indeed did NOT mean prop shaft.

The foot has not been submerged since I changed the oil.

The oil is leaking from the water intake and nowhere else.

There is water in the gearcase oil, and judging by the leak, there is oil in the cooling system.

I'm asking if there are other seals that specifically seal between the cooling system, and the gearcase.

The skeg is sealed, the propshaft is sealed, the exhuast housing is sealed.

So, is the seal on the driveshaft the only one that would allow transfer of cooling water and oil? Would the shift shaft seals cause this?

Do as suggested and check to see where the leak is coming from.

I think the easiest way to do it is find a trough or container large enough to submerge your lower unit in, up past the water pump, apply air and watch for bubbles.

Use a T fitting (vacuum lines) put a gauge on one side with rubber hose the other side of the T goes to the lower unit with the screw in adapter you use for filling the unit with oil, and the straight part of the T comes out with more rubber hose you put a air gun from compressor on.

I'm not sure how much air to apply with your motor, but no more than 8-10psi should be safe.

More than likely the vertical shaft seals under the waterpump housing. I replaced mine twice before I got them to stop leaking in another motor.

The other seals are good.

Can someone answer the question in the quote above please?

And I will most likely do the pressure check for peace of mind, but I'm a little focused on the questions in the quote at the moment.

I would reseal the gearcase even if only one seal is leakeing. There is 2 seals under the water pump that will allow water into the gearcase. Its been my experiance though you shouls replace all seals gaskets and orings at the same time also id replace the impeller at least if youve got it apart. cause you have to dissassemble the lower unit some what any way.
