I have water in my stringer 400 upper unit?s gear oil. How hard is and how can it be fixed? Does anyone have any ideas of where to start on how the oil got in?

What I would do is change the lube in the upper, now run on muffs and see if you are getting water in. This would tell you that water is probably being pumped in via the water pump into the upper. The seals are probably bad. Or you have small cracks in the upper itself. They best way to check for sure is simply to do a pressure check. You can buy a threaded nipple that will screw into the oil drain plug hole. Get a bicycle tire pump with a gauge and pump it up. You can then put the drive in a bucket and look for air bubbles and determine where the leak is.

Thanks I have changed the oil, and I am going run it on muff tonight. I did see some oil dripping from the steering gears in between the upper and intermediate drive. Could this be where the water is getting in?
