I have a 2000 Chaparall 290 with twin Volvo Pinta 5.0GI-SX. Starbord trim resevour repeatedly gets water in it. Has been checked under warranty a couple of times with no answer to how it got there. Its not a lot of water but enough to turn it the color of Peptobismal. My complaint was sometimes the trim would not operate. They flushed it out twice {seperate occassions}. Results, it worked for a while. It finally failed and had to be replaced {saltwater enviroment}. New pump and resivour assembly and flushed again. Worked fine but still getting water. System has "NO" external hydraulic leaks. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

One of the trim cylinders is leaking. It doesn't have to have fluid leaking out, it's water leaking in that is the problem. Two different processes and seals.
Replace the cylinders flush the system and it will be fine.

Thanks for reply. Warranty center says volvo wont replace cylinders unless they show signs of external leakage. Service center also brought to my attention that transom shower is located directly above trim pump and res. says shower assembly may be leaking and getting in system. Found no leaks but water will run down sprayer hose and into engine room from normal use. Is there any way water may get in the system around pump to res seal? I doubted it when 2nd assembly did same as 1st. Doesnt intrude on port system from washing and cleaning engine room.Engine and drive packages are still under volvo extended warranty program till 2007.

That is total Bull S#@%. I have changed cylinders that were leaking water in and Volvo never had a problem with the warranty claim. Sounds like you need to find another Volvo dealer or contact Volvo customer service your self.

Great response!!! My feelings exactly. Havent contacted volvo. But will tomorrow. Experinced volvo techs are few and far between here. Although we do have a couple of "service" centers. Sometimes I feel like I live in Merclooser, USA. Thanks and ill let you know what they say.

Re: Water In Tilt And Trim System

hello
look at your resevoir caps. if they are yellow and have a tiny vent hole in the top surface you may have found your leak. I really havent checked the later volvos but merc and volvo used it for years. tore up many units. boats are not designed to operate in a wet environment. I do know that finally merc about 2 years or so ago slotted the cap threads for a vent and did away with the hole in the topof the cap.
and I will second DonS. volvo has sent several cylinders that would allow water in but never showed leakage out.
what albermarle and carolina classic did was make a fiberglass box to shield the power units from water spray.

Rodbolt
This system has a black cap, no hole, and no cut threads, has a styrofoam seal. How will that vent? You were right about that yellow cap though my port system has this cap. No problem with this system. Never any water here. Seems as though one of these cylinders was changed about 2 yrs ago for a different reason. Not sure if it was this side or not. This problem has persisted since boat was new. Just takes a while for water to show up. Good chance its starboard outside cylinder. I want to think it was starboard inside that was changed.
