water in the cyl heads of my 4.3 volvo/gm engine

hello

i have a problem that just started with my 4.3l volvo/gm engine in my 1999 four winns horison 18 ft boat.
i was on the lake last week and the engine would not start..the boat was sitting for 1 hour and when i went to crank it over the engine did nothing.checked if battery was good and it was.tapped the starter and it turned for a brief sec then no more.tapped the started again and it had this loud noise from starter..
so back on dry land i repalced the starter and tried to start engine again.nothing..so i took a plug out and tired to spin the engine by hand..would not turn very much ..pulled a plug from the other side of the engine and tired to turn it by hand again..then all this water started to shoot out.so i removed the rest of the plugs and cranked it over..shot all the water out replaced the plugs and hooked the cups up and started the engine..it ran alittle ruff for 20-30 sec then smoothed out fine.revd it in gear and out of gear and it sounded and ran great..

so i have no idea why the water got into the cyl heads

any help would be great

Bad Manifolds leaking into the cylinders would be my 1st Guess............

How was it Running,......
And,.... What were you Doing the hour before when it Was running,..??...

it was running great up till then..

i was pulling the kids on the tube and then stopped for lunch ..then no start

Lots of Starts,+ Stops can cause a Backwash of water into the motor,......
Especially if the motor is Shut-Down, just as the boat Slows.......

Mercruisers use Flapper Valves in the downpipe to prevent this,....
I don't know if Volvo does or not........

Although it's typically bad exhaust manifolds, it does sound like backwash my have found it's way up the downpipe and into the engine. One thing for sure, you'll need to change your oil and filter at least twice since you now have water in your oil.
