Water in Pressure Gauge?

I have a 1999 Mercury ELPTO 115hp four cylinder motor that I fired up for the first time this season and the water pressure gauge started to fill up with water. The motor was spitting a constant stream from the hole so I know it was sucking up water to cool. (I used a garden hose with the cups on it that fit over the water intakes.) Is this an indication of something that may have frozen over the winter or just a bad gauge? Is it difficult to replace? Thanks in advance for your input. I appreciate all of you helpful techies! :)

jcoomer,

The guage is bad. There is a "bourdon" tube inside that has ruptured allowing water into the guage.

It's a simple one to replace. One fitting for the tube and 2 leads for the backlighting. A new guage is $20.00 t0 $30.00.

Re: Water in Pressure Gauge?

Thanks! I will order a new one and hopefully that will take care of it. I'll let you know otherwise.
