I have a Mercruiser, 1976,6cyl inline GM 165 horse. First time after I was out, I checked the oil... its white sludge in the pan. The engine compartment was also covered with it, blowen out of the carb/(pvc?).It was winterized. What went wrong here? I know the water was drained from the engine, could some have been left in. So how do you diagnose something like this, cracked block, head, manifold. Where do you start? Could there be any simple thing that has gone wrong or is my summer now ruined and it is time for a rebuilt? Thanks from cold Minnesota.

Re: Water in Oil

The block appears to be full of water. You'll need to suck it all out. Sooner or later. The sooner the better, but the water won't settle out of the oil for days or even weeks.

Now WHY, you ask?

Could be a leak was above the motor during last winter. Allowing all sorts of water to get in through carb or something. Drip by drip. Or boat uncovered and the hull filled till it found a way in.

Could be exhaust manifold. They can go bad allowing water into the exhaust port then eventualy into the motor.

Could be a blown head gasket at a cooling passage, Might only be visible with close inspection.

At any rate if you get the goop out of it and some fresh oil on the vital parts, Just pull manifold first I guess along with a check vale if it has one and have a pro look at, or test them.

Then you pull the head and put in a new gasket. If that fixes it youre ok. If not you start thinking about cracked block.

Here's another thought but probably remote. The piston/rings are so bad the and the blowby is horrendus it makes enough foam to make it look like that.

do a compression test to check for a bad head gasket. do u run in salt water? my $$$$ is on bad riser & or manifolds. have them pressure tested to check for cracks. DON'T run that engine with that oil in there. your risking disaster if u do. before u pull manifolds make sure u drain em first to prevent more water from entering the engine. good luck.
