I just recently realized that after starting my 89' evinrude outboard that my bilge pump wasn't working. I checked at that point, my oil resivoir tank and realized it had filled with rain water. I believe that water was injected into my engine via my injection pump. What problems can I run into? It seems that I'm experincing a miss. Although the engine fires easily.

It all depends on how fast you run it, and how long. You could have a train wreck in your hands there. Really! you could pull the cylinder heads for a look, but who knows about the bearings.

Pull the plugs and see what they look like. Are they real clean, looking like new, or do they have an oily coating on them. While you got them out, do a compression check. Let us know what you find...

Thats more common that you might think. Anyway, you have two options.

Hope that very little water got in and there was enough oil inside to protect the parts. Get the tank cleaned out and refilled. Drain the carbs. Run the motor at idle for at least an hour. Then run it under a load slowly until you are confident it going to be OK.

Or pull the heads and look to see if there is surface rust on the cylinder walls. On unprotected metal it only takes about 4 hours. If there is rust there, it will probably be on the crank and rods too. You may want to take it apart ASAP in that case.

Good luck!

I would suggest adding oil to the gas in the fuel tank until you've got the oil injection working AND clean.
